ASTM vs EN Pipe Standards: A Buyer’s Guide

Aug. 21, 2026

ASTM and EN are not interchangeable pipe grades. ASTM A53/A53M is a U.S. product specification covering welded and seamless black or hot-dipped galvanized steel pipe, while EN 10255 covers circular non-alloy steel tubes suitable for welding and threading. The correct choice depends on the project code, application, dimensions, connection method, coating, testing requirements, and required documentation.

Key Takeaways

  • ASTM and EN describe different standards systems, not simply two versions of the same pipe.

  • ASTM A53 is commonly specified for general mechanical, pressure, water, gas, and air applications.

  • EN 10255 focuses on circular non-alloy steel tubes suitable for welding and threading.

  • NPS, DN, outside diameter, wall thickness, and thread type must be checked separately.

  • Fire protection projects may require dedicated standards, listings, or approvals beyond a general pipe specification.

  • Buyers should request a complete compliance package before approving an equivalent pipe.

The official ASTM A53/A53M standard page describes the scope as welded and seamless black and hot-dipped galvanized steel pipe. It also lists NPS 1/8 to NPS 26 as the standard size range in its scope.

The BSI overview of BS EN 10255 describes circular non-alloy steel tubes with specified outside diameters from 10.2 mm to 165.1 mm. It also identifies medium and heavy series and confirms that BS EN 10255 replaced the older BS 1387 reference.

These ranges should not be treated as direct equivalents. A pipe with a similar nominal size may still have a different outside diameter, wall thickness, mass, thread, or pressure capability.

ASTM vs EN Pipe Standards: A Buyer’s Guide

ASTM A53 vs EN 10255: What Is the Practical Difference?

1. The scope is different

ASTM A53 is a product specification for steel pipe. It covers welded and seamless pipe and includes black and hot-dipped galvanized finishes. ASTM’s scope identifies applications such as mechanical and pressure service, including ordinary steam, water, gas, and air lines.

EN 10255 is primarily a technical delivery standard for circular non-alloy steel tubes that are suitable for welding and threading. It gives buyers options related to tube series, dimensions, ends, coatings, marking, inspection, and delivery.

This means an ASTM A53 pipe and an EN 10255 tube may serve a similar general-purpose application, but they are not automatically interchangeable.

2. Size conversion requires more than NPS and DN

A frequent procurement mistake is converting NPS to DN and assuming that the pipe will fit. Nominal size is only a designation. The actual outside diameter, wall thickness, internal diameter, mass, and connection detail still need to match.

For example, a project may specify:

  • Nominal size and actual outside diameter

  • Minimum or nominal wall thickness

  • Schedule or EN series

  • Plain, threaded, grooved, or flanged ends

  • Pipe length and dimensional tolerance

  • Required test pressure or inspection method

Do not approve an “equivalent” pipe based only on a similar nominal diameter.

3. Thread standards are separate

ASTM or EN pipe designation does not automatically tell you whether the thread is NPT, BSPT, BSPP, or another form. The pipe standard, thread standard, fitting standard, and sealing method should be listed separately in the purchase order.

This is particularly important when connecting imported valves, fire protection fittings, gauges, pumps, or existing pipework. KOXY’s malleable iron pipe fittings guide also highlights the importance of matching pipe fittings with the correct thread and dimensional standard.

4. Coating requirements must be written separately

A galvanized pipe specification and a zinc coating requirement are related but not identical. The RFQ should clearly state:

  • Pipe product standard

  • Galvanizing or coating standard

  • Minimum coating thickness or mass

  • Internal and external coating requirements

  • Inspection method

  • Repair requirements for cut ends or damaged areas

For galvanized pipe buyers, KOXY’s galvanized pipe product page references ASTM A53, BS 1387, GB/T 3091, and internal control requirements. Because BS 1387 has been replaced by BS EN 10255 in the BSI reference, buyers should confirm whether the project requires the legacy BS reference or the current EN designation.

Do ASTM and EN Standards Apply to Fire Protection Pipe?

Not automatically.

A general-purpose pipe standard may not satisfy every fire protection project. The designer, authority having jurisdiction, insurer, or local code may require a dedicated fire protection pipe specification, product listing, approval, or inspection document.

For example, ASTM A795/A795M is specifically titled as a standard specification for black and hot-dipped galvanized welded and seamless steel pipe for fire protection use.

The correct workflow is:

Project code or AHJ requirement → Application → Pipe standard → Size and wall thickness → Connection method → Testing and listing documents → Supplier confirmation

KOXY’s existing fire sprinkler pipe material selection guide can be used alongside this article when the project involves sprinkler systems or fire mains.

A Practical RFQ Checklist

Before requesting a quotation, include the following information:

  • Application: water supply, fire protection, HVAC, gas, air, or industrial service.

  • Standard: ASTM A53, EN 10255, ASTM A795, or another project-specified reference.

  • Size: NPS/DN, outside diameter, wall thickness, and schedule or EN series.

  • Manufacturing type: welded or seamless, where applicable.

  • Finish: black, galvanized, painted, epoxy-coated, or lined.

  • Ends: plain, threaded, grooved, beveled, or flanged.

  • Thread: NPT, BSPT, BSPP, or another required form.

  • Testing: hydrostatic, dimensional, coating, chemical, or third-party inspection.

  • Documents: MTC, certificate of conformity, inspection report, traceability, and markings.

  • Destination requirements: local code, customs documents, labeling, and certification needs.

For corrosion-sensitive projects, also review the related KOXY guide on galvanized steel pipe service life. Coating thickness, exposure conditions, storage, handling, and internal fluid chemistry can all affect long-term performance.

How KOXY Helps Buyers Compare Pipe Standards

KOXY supplies steel pipes, pipe fittings, valves, and fire protection equipment as part of a broader piping package. This is useful when a project requires more than a single pipe item and the buyer needs to coordinate pipe dimensions, fittings, valves, connection methods, inspection documents, and delivery.

When sending an RFQ to KOXY, provide the project standard, pipe schedule or EN series, connection method, coating requirement, quantity, destination, and required documents. KOXY can then confirm whether the requested pipe is available as specified, whether a documented alternative is possible, and which supporting fittings or valves should be included.

The goal is not to choose ASTM or EN based on geography alone. The better decision is to select the standard that matches the project code, application, dimensions, connection system, inspection requirements, and acceptance process.

Need help comparing an ASTM or EN pipe specification? Send KOXY your drawing, bill of materials, or RFQ. Our team can review the pipe, fitting, valve, and documentation requirements together.
